Choosing an avenue in life that will allow you to exercise both your competencies and your creativity can be challenging, but sometimes following your heart can lead you to great things.
This was very much the case for two brothers- twins actually- who grew up challenging one another in everything from martial arts to acting. Raised in a home by two parents that encouraged them to explore the things they dreamed up, these two young men started their very first business at the ripe old age of 7.
Making a crafty hangar that sparked interest from several local women and boutiques, these two young entrepreneurs ended up “hiring” their older brother and mother to help them keep up with the demand for their product. They were hooked.
Once they made it into high school, they took another risk. While most sixteen year-olds worry about investing their pocket money in a cool car, these two forward-thinkers used some of their left over hangar money to make a $250 down payment on $200,000 house. They worked with a small crew to renovate and redesign the home and later sold it for $250,000. Their first profit in real estate opened their eyes to the fact that it could be more than a hobby- it could be a viable career.
Monday Morning Perspective
“It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.” Theodore Roosevelt
“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” Leonardo da Vinci
Drew and Jonathan took that initial investment and rolled in into another property. They each pursued academic avenues and certifications to further their chances of success. Drew became a licensed real estate agent, and Jonathan studied construction and design. Soon they had developed a process that enabled them to help others renovate properties for a profit.
After seeing success with their business model, the two began thinking of ways to incorporate their second love, acting and production, to what they were doing. The product of that powerful combination has become the fastest growing fan-favorite show on HGTV, Property Brothers. Their successful ratings of 2 million viewers a week has allowed them to launch a second show recently called “Buying and Selling with the Property Brothers”, and it appears that there is no limit to what these two committed entrepreneurs can do.
Drew and Jonathan Scott are living proof that seeking out the right career- one that combines talents and passion- is exactly the right combination required for success.
If you haven’t found that balance, never quit exploring the opportunities around you- they are endless. After all, the Scott Twins are millionaires in real estate and TV, but they started in the hangar business. Good thing they knew when to “hang it up” and move on to their next calling!
Your next calling might be shouting your name. Are you listening?
Have a wonderful week!
