Priorities & Paint

Have you ever wondered why it’s so difficult to get things done? My clients and I discuss this frequently. One of the most common issues that people face is procrastination- and it’s becoming even more prevalent with the infiltration of social media into every aspect of our lives. Most individuals who have more than two social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, etc.) spend an average of 2 hours per week engaged online. Most recently, I discovered that some clients wake up to text messages, Facebook updates, and tweets in the middle of the night- and they respond! Talk about being Linked In! It’s no wonder we don’t have enough time in the day to accomplish the rest of the items on our to-do lists.

If you fail to protect a few precious moments per day that are devoted to yourself or to family time, it is no wonder that the stress of walking in your shoes takes its toll. I am just as guilty of this at times. For instance, I have been determined to paint a number of rooms in our new home and between balancing a marriage, parenthood, a business, and various social engagements I have literally been staring at custom beige walls for almost a year. That’s 365 days of beige, just to be clear.

So finally this past weekend, after traveling home on Saturday morning from a trip to California, my husband and I made a plan to finally tackle this home improvement project. On Sunday afternoon we loaded up both boys, drove to Lowe’s, spend the required amount of time looking at paint chips, and drove away armed with all of the supplies needed to spend the remainder of the day painting.

Great plan, right? We thought so. That was until my kids decided to be “helpful” and went so far as to enlist our new dog’s tail as their paintbrush of choice. (Awesome pattern detail for those of you who are looking for a fresh new paint scheme for your interior decorating needs!)

After over two hours of mid-paint-job clean-up, we surrendered. We had dinner as a family, put the kids to bed, and went back to work (until the wee hours of the morning). But finishing the paint job and making our walls cheerful colors wasn’t the real victory. Getting rid of our beige walls was just the result of tackling a priority list. The real pay off was the amount of laughter and fun we had as a family attempting to get the job done.

Sometimes the best priorities are the ones you can combine to make the most out of life!
